Daycare Means...

Germs!

It took two days in an infant room at daycare for Sienna to come home with a slightly stuffy nose.  By day three, she was a snotty mess, barely able to breathe through her nose and coughing throughout the night.  I was dreading this moment even though I knew it was bound to happen.  I was hoping she would at least make it through the first week or two.  But no, two days is all it took!

I know everyone is thinking "Of course she got sick!  Daycare is full of germ-y, snotty kids!"  Well, we didn't make the decision to enroll her there lightly.  We explored every option; looking at small in-home daycares, nanny-shares, and large daycare facilities.  Each option had its pros and cons, and at the end, we felt that the daycare facility we chose was a good fit.  We worked with our social worker to educate the staff and let them know what they can do to help us keep her healthy.  I felt good about our choice, until she came home sick two days in...now I question whether it was the right move.

When Sienna gets sick, we have two calls to make: one to her Pediatrician and the other to her clinic.  Both offices felt she just had a cold and only needed time to fight it off.  However, because Sienna cultures Staph in her lungs, her clinic did call us in a prescription for Augmentin, an antibiotic, should her symptoms worsen.  The worry is that the Staph will take advantage of her suppressed immune system and grow; which will in turn make her sick(er).  We don't need to put her on the antibiotic now; but we have it available to us should she need it.

We did keep her out of daycare for the remaining two days last week in order to give her time to fight off the cold without exposure to additional germs (since her immune system is down).  The daycare currently has some nasty illnesses circulating around, and we want to protect her as best as we can.  Sienna did seem pretty miserable on Thursday, but after a few days of extra sleep and extra snuggles, she seems to be back to her normal, crazy self.

Fingers crossed she kicks this cold soon and we make it through the rest of flu and cold season unscathed.

Sick baby equals extra cuddles

Someone is feeling better!
