Spring Colds
March was a tough month for us. April isn't looking much better.
Sienna fought off two colds and pink eye over her first four weeks of daycare. And like a viscous cycle, every time Sienna came down with a cold, it took roughly 24 hours for me to get that cold, and about 48 hours for Joe to get it. We've gone through A LOT of tissues and saline in our house. We've perfected our technique using the Nose Freida, and we've figured out how to administer eye drops to an infant that wants you no where near her face.
Her first cold came on quickly after just two days in daycare. Luckily, the congestion and coughing didn't stick around long and she was better in under two weeks. This new cold, however, has been a tough one on us all.
After daily emails back in forth with her clinic this past week, her Pulmonologist decided he wanted to see her and he wanted chest x-rays done due to a "wet" cough she had had for several days. X-rays help us detect inflammation and/or damage to the lungs caused by infections. So on Wednesday, we took Sienna to the Children's Hospital for chest x-rays, and then over to clinic to get checked out. I'm happy to report her chest x-rays looked perfectly clear! (Yay Sienna!)
While her lungs checked out good, her nose was another story. In order to help the mucus loosen and drain, we are now using a nebulizer twice a day with a mix of Albuterol and Hypertonic Saline. The first few times using the nebulizer and inhaled meds was terrible. We had to force the mist in her face for 15 grueling, hysterical baby, minutes. My heart just broke for her. We've since learned that her bouncy seat with some baby tv helps keep her distracted enough to allow us to use the nebulizer on her. I'm pretty against putting her in front of the tv, but hey, it works and that's all that matters right now.
She seemed to be getting better as the week went on. What a tease. On Friday, her daycare's phone number popped up on the caller ID. I'm sure every parent can relate to that feeling of panic and dread seeing your child's care provider calling unexpectedly. I was hoping it was another "just wanted to let you know another child has X sickness." But no, this time the conversation was different. She had a fever of 102. By the time I picked her up, her fever was up to 103.6. I called her pediatrician who decided he wanted to see her...so back to the doctor's we went. You could never have guessed she didn't feel well. Sienna is such a trooper. She smiled and waved at the nurses when we got there. They all smiled and waved back saying she was the happiest baby they have ever seen.
Her Pediatrician took one peek inside her mouth and said he found the source of her fever. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I don't know), the two strep tests came back negative. They say she likely has at a virus; which just has to run it's course.
This weekend we've had one miserable, little girl, who can't get a break from her fever (and probable sore throat). Please keep her in your thoughts and send some well wishes her way!
