Atlanta Getaway
Jen: It's going to be a hot weekend. We should take the girls to the aquarium.
Joe: I hate our aquarium. It's is over priced and last time Sienna ran through it in thirty minutes. I'd rather spend the money and drive to Atlanta.
Jen: So, do you want to go to Atlanta?
Is that how impromptu vacations start in your home too? 24 hours later, after securing a sweet hotel room at a low price through Priceline, and asking a neighbor to come by a few times and play with the dog/feed him/give him some love, we were driving to Atlanta.
Joe and I lived in Boston before moving to "the south," and really miss the city life sometimes. Atlanta is about four hours from us, so it seemed like a good destination for a weekend getaway. We left late in the afternoon on Friday, and got in just in time to grab some dinner, have Sienna do her treatments and go to bed. We bought sleeping bags thinking the girls would think it's fun to use them in a hotel - however the novelty of them wore off quickly and the girls ended up climbing into the beds. That night was one of the worst nights of sleep I've had thanks to Tess. That child needs her own space/room, because if she senses me there, all she wants to do is nurse all night (yes...still!).
Saturday morning we got up with plans to check out Olympic park and the Georgia Aquarium. Starbucks in hand, we popped the girls in the stroller and headed out for the day. What's nice about Atlanta, is that all the touristy places are located in the same downtown block of the city (Georgia Aquarium, Ferris Wheel, World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Dome, Center for Civil and Human Rights, Football Hall of Fame). The girls loved the playgrounds at Olympic Park.
It was good to get outside and play before it got too hot to bear it. There's nothing worse than insanely hot playground slides and swings! Once we saw the camp buses pull up to the aquarium, we knew it was time to get a move on it.
We spent WAY more than 30 minutes at the Georgia aquarium. It definitely holds up to it's reputation for cool exhibits and things to see. I think everyone's favorite part was the dolphin show. How cool to watch the tricks they can do and their relationships with trainers! We spent about four hours at the aquarium before Tess became over tired and cranky. She passed out quickly in the stroller on the way out.
We walked around for a bit, until Sienna pleaded enough for a chance to go on the Ferris Wheel. Joe took her while I sat with Tess and the stroller.
We walked around for a bit, until settling on a small pub for lunch and beers. Our timing was impeccable because a downpour opened up shortly after we sat down. We waited out the storm and then strolled around the city a bit more.
It was recommended to check out 'Underground Atlanta' which we did after lunch. This area may have been neat a decade ago, but it was pretty bare and honestly, a bit sketchy, so we didn't stick around long. We headed back to our hotel so the girls could go swimming. I think it was at this point we decided to not stay the night and drive home instead. I was worried about our dog spending another night alone, we didn't feel like being out another $30 for parking overnight, plus we didn't think we'd get to do much before heading out in the morning anyway. So, we did the hotel pool for a bit, picked up a pizza for dinner, then got ready to take off. The girls showered and got in PJs, and then Sienna got her treatments done while we packed up the room and Joe brought stuff out to the car.
We left around 8:30, getting us home a little after midnight. Best decision ever! Nick was overwhelmingly happy that we were home, and we had all of Sunday to wind down and hang out.
While we had a blast, Atlanta doesn't compare to some of our favorite cities. We'll sneak in some beach trips, and maybe mountain trips until next year when we make it back to Boston.
What are you favorite getaway spots?
