Fall is Here! Adventures Apple Picking

It's September, which means all things pumpkin are now out -- lattes, muffins, beer, apparel, you name it, there's now a pumpkin version in the stores. It also means football is back on, and the weather is cooling...well sort of. Usually, this time of year I break out a light sweater, and my boots, and get excited for all the fun fall activities. And at the same time, the weather (and Joe) remind me that I live in the south, and it's just not fall yet.

This past weekend was no exception to our annual dance. It's mid September, but the temps were in the upper 80s. Sienna must have gotten my love for "fall", and had been begging to go apple picking, so we decided to start on our fall bucket list despite the summer feeling.

Sunday afternoon we ventured out to catch the last wagon out to the orchard at Carrigan Farms. The sun was still hot, and there was minimal shade, but Sienna was ready to find apples. The tractor/wagon took us out to a small animal area, where the girls checked out sheep, goats and bunnies before deciding it smelled like animals and they wanted to get on with it.  We walked down to the apple trees and navigated through hundreds...if not thousands...of fallen apples.  I'm guessing Irma's winds took them out the weekend prior.

The girls had their adorable Lola twirl dresses on from Graystitch, and received SO many compliments from all the other apple pickers. They did look pretty adorable.

Tess wasn't a fan of walking on rotting apples, or the tractor driving by, so she spent the majority of the time on my hip, watching Sienna. I know the norm for most might be the fun of eating apples while picking them at the orchard, but we feel more comfortable cleaning them before letting Sienna eat. Sienna doesn't mind (or know any different), so together, we picked apples and filled our bags until we could fit no more and then we walked back to the farmhouse where we enjoyed freshly made apple cider.

When we got home, I washed a bag of apples while Joe took the girls for one last swim in the neighborhood pool. I cut and peeled a half dozen of them and prepped to make one of my favorite fall desserts. When my helpers returned, we made the season's first apple crisp!

I'm so excited for the weather to cool down and for it to really feel like fall here. In the meantime, we'll be enjoying apples, apple crisp, and apple pie! What's your favorite fall activity?
